About:
Matt Wagner is an acclaimed American comic book writer and artist best known for his work on Mage and Grendel, two influential creator-owned series that have left a lasting impact on the independent comics scene. Born on October 9, 1961, Wagner emerged in the early 1980s as a fresh voice in comics, blending myth, noir, and literary sophistication with a bold, expressive art style.
Wagner's breakout work, Mage: The Hero Discovered (1984), was published by Comico and later continued by Image Comics. The semi-autobiographical fantasy series follows a modern-day hero, Kevin Matchstick, in a mythic quest steeped in Arthurian lore. Its sequel, Mage: The Hero Defined, and the long-awaited conclusion, Mage: The Hero Denied, completed the trilogy over several decades.
Perhaps even more influential is Grendel, a sprawling saga that began as a noir crime story centered on Hunter Rose, a criminal mastermind and writer. The series evolved into a multi-generational epic examining the nature of power, violence, and legacy. Published initially by Comico and later by Dark Horse Comics, Grendel became a cornerstone of Wagner’s career, showcasing his range as both a writer and a visual storyteller.
In addition to his creator-owned projects, Wagner has worked extensively with major publishers like DC Comics. He revitalized classic characters in titles such as Batman and the Monster Men, Batman and the Mad Monk, and the critically acclaimed Trinity, which explores the first meeting of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. His distinctive style and narrative voice have also contributed to series like Sandman Mystery Theatre, Zorro, and various _Green Hornet_titles.
Matt will be a guest at the Hero Initiative booth all weekend.
